Salary: GS-09, $52,912 (Step 01) to $68,781 (Step 10);GS-11, $64,017 (Step 01) to $83,228 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a(n) Geographer/Geologist within the Volcano Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Prepare digital geologic maps and other geologic visualization products. Perform GIS database creation, map generation analysis, model building, and database management using ArcGIS and related software. Analyze data using GIS for volcano monitoring, research and eruption response. Provide expertise in recording lava flow and other field measurements to produce maps and hazard assessments. Prepare and presents metadata and text to accompany geospatial and other digital data releases. Leads publication of map or scientific reports on GIS methodology. Assists in monitoring, science and outreach with field data gathering, map and figure preparation, and analysis of monitoring data. Travel Required Occasional travel - average travel is 2 nights per month. Qualifications For information on basic qualifications, which includes information on whether you may substitute education for specialized experience, please click on the following: Geographer 0150 : **************************************************************************************** Geologist 1350: *************************************************************************************** For the GS-9: In ition to the basic education requirement as stated above, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes performing limited geological studies and preliminary analyses; preparing digital geologic maps and other geologic visualization products; assisting in the analysis and computation of data to create scientific products; designing and populating spatial databases. This level of work would have involved following established procedures or detailed instructions and required familiarity with a variety of basic geographic tools and a good working knowledge of the principles and the theories of geology and volcanology. For the GS-11: In ition to the basic education requirement as stated above, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine geologic/geographic work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. Work would have included the responsibility to review and edit for completeness, consistency and accuracy a variety of scientific products including maps, technical specifications, tables, reports and other presentation material. Such work requires a professional knowledge of geology or geography and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement. Education Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
